How does Earnin Unemployment work and what are the requirements?

Earnin is now able to serve community members who receive unemployment benefits through direct deposits in a checking account. We understand that this is a hard time and we want to be there for our community members. Please keep in mind, this is a new feature for us, so we ask for your patience while we continue to learn the needs of our community members and improve the feature!

We’re starting off by supporting most states, and we plan to roll out the rest over the coming weeks. Note we aren’t accepting unemployment benefits from the federal government.

How to sign up

If you are a new community member to Earnin, please follow the steps below.

If you’d like to sign up to cash out your unemployment benefits, then select unemployed when you’re filling out your pay information.

Note: You must have the current version of the Earnin app (10.40) to change to unemployment

  1. Tap No for Are you currently employed?
  2. Select the state you’re receiving unemployment benefits from
  3. Select how you receive your unemployment benefits
    1. Only direct deposits to checking accounts are accepted
  4. Connect your bank account to Earnin

While we’re working hard to support as many of you as we can, we’re unable to support all states for unemployment benefits today. If we are able to set you up, you will receive an email from Earnin with next steps. We are working as quickly as possible to support all our community members on unemployment benefits.

If you are an existing Earnin community member, please follow the steps below

Please also make sure the checking account linked to Earnin is the one where you’re receiving unemployment direct deposits

Once you complete these steps, we will work on getting your account set up for you. You will receive an email once our system has your new pay cycle established and you are ready to cash out!

When you can cash out on your unemployment benefits

Once we see that you’ve received three direct deposits of your unemployment benefits to your checking account, we can establish a pay cycle based on when you received your checks. Pay cycle is determined by looking at the time frame between each check.

Afterward, we will switch your employer status to unemployment and add unemployment benefits for Cash Out. Once your account is all set up, you’ll be able to cash out up to $100 per pay period. You will receive an email once you are ready to cash out.

Things to keep in mind

  1. File your unemployment benefits in the state you work
  2. Remember to file your claims on time to help us identify your checks faster
  3. Make sure the bank account linked to Earnin is the one where you’re receiving unemployment direct deposits
